Congress leaders give tickets to kith & kin

The Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee has given tickets to a lot of ‘fresh’ faces that are relatives of its leaders. in particular in case of the women candidate, numerous of them are either the wife of a leader, mother of another or the daughter-in-law of the third. For many of them its their first foray into politics.

One of the reasons for fielding them was that the seat was being eyed by the male members of the family. on the other hand, due to condition of seats for women candidates the ladies were fielded.

Gurbax Rawat, who is contesting from constituency 9, is the wife of Bartenders Rawat, head of Uttarakhand unit. The ward comprises Sectors 39 and 40. With the area reportedly having a large number of people from Uttarakhand, the seat was given to Rawat. “The area has not witnessed development that was required. My aim will be providing facilities for the residents,” she said.

Another candidate, Anita Tiwari is the wife of upper house leader Shashi Shanker Tiwari. She will be contesting from ward 23 comprising Hallomajra and Ramdarbar. Her husband had been eyeing ward 20. However, this was reserved for a scheduled caste candidate. Thereafter his wife was chosen a ticket from the ward reserved for women candidates.

Anita, who is a housewife, will be contest for the first time on a assembly ticket, she had contested a previous election on a BJP ticket but lost. She said, “I have started meeting people in the ward accompanied by my husband. The BJP councillor who was elected from the ward has not undertaken development in the area. There is a lot of work that has to be done.”
